Dunn's article excellently expands on the importance of sound in all of life. He goes into a greater depth of pointing out the different categories of sound, from the complexities of music, to the simplicity of listening to the environment surrounding you. Sound is such an important part of life, and it connects all forms of life in the world in many different ways. We hear sounds coming from individual beings, as well as the entire environment surrounding us. Sound gives us our sense of awareness, and paints a mental image in our brains that help us throughout our lives. This sense of awareness also calms the mind, and is often a great method of meditation, as explained by Dunn. Sound is used for survival, by detecting hostile and unfriendly noises. Communication would almost not be possible without sound, with the formation of languages. As Dunn states, almost all creatures, not just humans, connect with each other through music. Music has been a constant byproduct of sound, and is immensely important in society.
I never really focus on the detail of sounds that enter my ears everyday. From the wind blowing outside, to the sound of the heater in my room, so many of these sounds accompany my life almost everyday. Music takes up a very large part of my life, in terms of sound. Music is often called the soundtrack to our lives, and I am a firm believer of that. Sound is something that many of us truly take for granted, and focusing on the certain sounds that we may mentally cancel out may help expand our appreciation for sound.
